Hello

My name is Ross Johnson.  I am a photographer based in Edmonton, Canada.

I have been many things during my career, and I have had the privilege of traveling to many different countries.  I have lived in Canada, the United States, Egypt, Israel, and Rwanda, and I have traveled to many more countries.

I have a wide variety of interests, and I hope that is reflected in my photography.

I first started taking photographs over forty years ago, when dinosaurs roamed the earth and Kodak was king.  I pretty much stopped taking photographs when film died around 2003, and I couldn't afford the transition to digital photography.  The quality of digital was dreadful in those days, so I lost interest.

A few years ago I attended my youngest son's graduation from high school, and I saw a digital single-lens reflex camera there that was taking photographs in low-light conditions that you would never dream of using film in.  That caught my interest, and now I shoot with a Nikon D810 and Nikkor lenses, and I'm back in the game.

Digital photography sets you free in a way that film never could.  To see what I mean, take a look at the pilot sitting in the cockpit of his F16 fighter jet in the Aircraft gallery.  He was flying several hundred meters away, and quickly.  I caught the image, sharp and clear, with a handheld 500mm lens.  You can see the wrinkles in his flight suit, as well as his squadron crest.  In another image of the F16 flying on its side, you can clearly see the flight documents on the pilot's thighs.  Either image would have been impossible in the days of film.  We are clearly in the age of magic, and I want my photographs to reflect that fact.
